Objectives: This study used conversation analysis (CA) to explore the patterns and structures in the therapeutic process of a solution-focused family therapy session.
Methods: CA was used to analyze a videotaped single session of solution-focused family therapy. The session, conducted by Insoo Kim Berg, involved a conflictual mother and son. Through intense examination of the verbal and nonverbal communication among the three participants, particularly Berg¡¯s responses to the clients¡¯ talk of complaints and problems, nine categories of therapeutic strategies were noted.
Results: Solution-focused questions and solution-focused, principle-based strategies were subcategorized into nine therapeutic strategies.
Conclusions: The limitations of the study and the implications for the field of family therapy were discussed.
